The Maths Behind Beauty

Scientists at the University of Manchester, working with the supermarket chain Asda, have come up with the golden ratios for beauty.

According to David Holmes, a senior psychology lecturer at the University of Manchester, "The human curve has come to represent the healthiest and most fertile form, highlighting the most suitable breeding partner and has evolved to be universally attractive to males for that reason."

Here are the findings of the survery:
* A, DD or E cup is considered the optimum breast size.
* The ideal thigh-height ratio - calculated by dividing the thigh's thickest circumference by total height - 0.3
* Hip-Waist ratio is reached by dividing circumference of the waist by that of the hips - the optimum figure is 0.7
* Scores of 1 to 5 are assigned for 'body curve line' and 'body symmetry' based on visual assessment. Higher the total score, the more perfect the hourglass shape.

Been reading news about research on such beauty ratios for years. I guess after taking into account cultural differences we would realize these optimums are just an indicator and not the exact figure. It would be interesting to find out the parameters used for scoring 'body curve line' and 'body symmetry.'

P K Sinha : National Smart Identity Card

Read an interesting article yesterday. According to it, P K Sinha, a Physics teacher in Agra, has proposed the government's project to provide a unique identification number of every citizen be made the basis of issuing 'National Smart Identity Cards' that can be used to provide social security, education and health to all citizens. The smart card can also play the role that the permanent account number plays for taxation purposes.

PK Sinha has aired these views in his book, 'Curing the Ills of India.' The National Smart Identity Card would provide comprehensive social security to all at a cost of Rs. 2,000 per person/per annum.

The Smart Card would guarantee (per month) :
* 6 Kg foodgrain
* 6 Kg pulses
* 3 Lts cooking oil
* 250 gm iodised salt
* Rs 250 worth kerosene oil
* Rs 100 worth clothes

The total expenses will be about Rs 194,700 crore per year. The idea is practical coz food grains needed for distribution come to 79.2 million tonnes for the whole nation. The current production is 205 million tonnes.

Sinha also proposes expanding the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, which only cover below-poverty-line families right now. Another recommendation is for a higher education system in which the student pays back in the form of additional taxes once he/she starts earning. The pay-back will help the government start more educational institutions, forcing private institutions to reduce costs. The schemes to be scrapped are the mid-day meal, the Rs. 50,000 rural job scheme and various subsidies on chemical fertilisers and fuel. He proposes to raise money by increasing the tax on items like soft drinks and liquor.

The idea is certainly worth a look. The real issues behind India's poverty are lack of education, hierarchial social structure and most importantly the culture of commission and bribery. Technology can certainly help reduce the wastages in distribution. Recently the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand announced that the progress of files in various ministries and departments would be trackable, by the citizens, thru the internet. The central education minister also announced some new steps that would help bring about transparency in the education sector and prevent students from being cheated.

I believe if distribution losses are cut down and the money reaches the intended beneficiaries we can see bottoms up growth in India. Ofcourse the major challenge is changing the mindset of government employees. Visited the IT Development Agency of Uttarakhand's office a few months ago and pointed out the reason I was there was bcoz I wanted the latest info and most sections of the website had not been updated for years. Pat came the reply - 'Policies are made just once.' Time for IT revolution 2.0 in Indian Governance?

Jyoti Basu No More

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former Chief Minister of West Bengal - Jyoti Basu - passed way at 11.47 am on Sunday. He was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata on the first day of this year and his condition was critical.

Left Front Chairman Biman Bose made the announcement. Jyoti Basu died of multi-organ failure, and was on ventilator support for the past 48 hours. The Prime Minister and other prominent leaders of the country had been visiting Jyoti Basu in the hospital.

He was the Chief Minister of West Bengal for 23 years, perhaps a world record, and resigned in 2000 due to poor health. He came close to becoming the Prime Minister of the country, but had to let go, due to opposition from his own party members.

Born July 8, 1914, in Kolkata, the son of a doctor was schooled in Loreto and St. Xavier's. He graduated from the Presidency College of Kolkata with an honours in English in 1935.

He then studied law in London where he came in contact with the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB), the alma mater of many an Indian Communist. Basu's early associates included the veteran British Communists Harry Pollitt, Rajani Palme Dutt and Ben Bradley. In London, he joined the India League and the Federation of Indian Students in Great Britain.

On returning to India, Basu joined the then undivided Communist Party of India (CPI) and in 1944, three years before the British Raj ended, started working among railway workers.He got into electoral politics in 1946, getting elected to the Bengal Legislative Assembly.

Winning elections then became a habit for Basu. After independence, he was repeatedly elected to the West Bengal legislature, starting in 1952. When the CPI split in 1964 parallel to the Sino-Soviet break-up, Basu became one of the nine founding politburo members of the more radical CPI-M.

West Bengal was in turmoil in the late 1960s, with a section of the CPI-M revolting in a small West Bengal village known as Naxalbari and igniting a bloody Maoist movement. Two shaky and shortlived governments took office in West Bengal in 1967 and 1969, and Basu was the deputy chief minister -- his first stint as an administrator.

They are doctors, nurses, logistics experts, administrators, epidemiologists, laboratory technicians, mental health professionals, and others who work together in accordance with Doctors Without Borders guiding principles of humanitarian action and medical ethics.

Doctors Without Borders field staff are supported by their colleagues in 19 offices around the world, including one in New York. The vast majority of Doctors Without Borders aid workers are from the communities where the crises are occurring, with ten percent of teams made up of international staff, including more than 200 aid workers from the US in 2007.

Haridwar Kumbh 2010 : Largest Human Gathering

Kumbh Mela starts in a few days at Haridwar. The preparations are in full swing and local papers carry stories on the event every day.

Kumbh Mela is celebrated when Jupiter (Brihaspati) moves in the zodiac sign of Aquarius (Kumbh). It is celebrated every 12 years, by rotation, at Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Ardh (Half) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 6 years at Haridwar and Prayag. Maha (Great) Kumbh Mela occurs every 144 years and is held at Prayag.

Kumbh Mela has been celebrated for centuries and the first written account is by Huan Tsang/Xuanzang a Chinese traveller who visited India in the 7th century AD.

Kumbh 2010 would be spread over 3 1/2 months and well over 100 million people are expected to take a dip in the Ganga river.

Security arrangements are very tight in this Kumbh, considering the threat of terror strikes.

I've been to Haridwar a few times. First time was for my grandfather's funeral. I respect these river towns and am very tolerant of religious events which are held in the open and don't require intermediaries.

Not sure if I would visit Haridwar during the Kumbh Mela 2010. Crowds don't attract me and each Kumbh Mela there are numerous stampedes, killing and injuring hundreds.

Hopefully this Kumbh Mela would pass without any untoward happening .

Chandrabadni Temple Kargi Dehradun

Attended Raturi Vansham's first general meeting of 2010, held today, at the Chandrabadni Temple, Kargi, Dehradun. The weather was pleasant and the atmosphere cordial. The meeting was scheduled to start at 11:00 AM but since we are used to the IST, it actually began about 90 minutes late.

Mr. Gopal Dutt Raturi, Chief Secretary of the organisation gave the welcome address to more than 40 members present at the meeting.

There was a discussion on future projects, which as is the custom in India, began deteriorating into the "nothing can be done" argument, before the President intervened.
Positives which emerged are:

* initiating a website for the organisation.
* making the membership form simpler and waiving off the membership fee for potential members who are not well-off economically.
* construction of a Dharamshala in Dehradun.

Mr. Govind Ram Raturi was appointed election officer by the current President Mr. Girish Sharan Raturi and the governing council dissolved. Elections were thereafter held for the new council and all candidates chosen by a voice vote.

The Governing Council chosen for the next 2 years comprises of:
* Mr. Girish Sharan Raturi - Adhyaksh (President)
* Mr. Satya Prasad Raturi - Upadhyaksh (Vice - President)
* Mr. Gopal Dutt Raturi - Maha Sachive (Chief Secretary)
* Mr. Deveshwar Prasad Raturi - Sangathan Sachiv (Organisation Secretary)
* Mr. Suman Raturi - Sah Sachiv (Additional Secretary)
* Mr. Sanjay Raturi - Koshadhyaksh (Treasurer)

An important discussion initiated by Mr. Girish Sharan Raturi, who concluded the meeting, was regarding organising a get together of Raturis in Ratura. Rather than write the views of members present in the meeting, I would request you to please forward your suggestions. Uploading President's Address and questions on organising meet in Ratura.

Expect to see more participation in the next meeting, specially by the younger section and females.

Resveratrol : Sources and Research

Resveratrol is a Flavonol belonging to the group of Flavonoids. Flavonoids are a group of Phytochemicals, which number more than a thousand. Plants produce Phytochemicals to protect themselves from bacterial and fungal infections, stress, injury and Ultra Violet radiation. Though they are not needed by the human body for sustaining life, research has indicated that Resveratrol and other Phytochemicals are beneficial for human beings and other animals.

For those of you who are chemically inclined, one molecule of Resveratrol consists of 14 atoms of carbon, 12 of hydrogen and 3 atoms of oxygen. It's molecular weight is 228.

Resveratrol is found in grapes, peanuts, blueberries, bilberries, cranberries, spruce, eucalyptus, giant knotweed and the root of Polygonum Cuspidatum, also known as Hu Zhang or Kojo-Kon.

Takaoka was the first person to isolate Resveratrol. He isolated Resveratrol from the roots of White Hellebore in 1940 and from the roots of Japanese Knotweed in 1963. Resveratrol entered public glare in 1992, when it was suggested that it's presence in wine is responsible for wine's cardio-protective properties.

Reseveratrol has been found beneficial in many experiments on non-human subjects:
1997: Jang reported that topical Resveratrol applications prevented skin cancer development in mice-treated with a carcinogen.
2003: groups of Howitz and Sinclair reported in Nature that Resveratrol significantly extends the lifespan of the yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae.
2006: Italian scientists were able to extend the median lifespan of a short-lived fish, Nothobranchius Furzeri, by 56%, using Resveratrol supplementation.
2006: Sinclair reports that Resveratrol counteracted the bad effects of a high-fat diet in mice.
2006:Johan Auwerx and coauthors published an online article which claimed mice fed Resveratrol for 15 weeks had better treadmill endurance than mice which weren't given Resveratrol.
2008: Researchers at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University reported that Resveratrol significantly reduced Plaque formation in animal brains. Plaque formation in brains is one of the causes of Alzheimer and other other Neurodegenerative diseases.

Avatar Becomes All-Time Top Grosser

Billions and Billionaires interest me a lot. A few months back had in mind to make a post about movies which have made over a billion US $ at the box office.

I'm very good at procrastination and that post didn't materialise.

Yesterday saw a news article which said 'Avatar' has broken the record for making the fastest billion at the box office. The post title is in anticipation of 'Avatar' breaking Titanic's record and becoming the all-time top grosser.

This way, I won't have to create another post to draw traffic, when 'Avatar' does break the record. The trick worked when AR Rahman won at the Oscars.

So far 5 movies have made over a billion US $ at the box-office:

1) Titanic - $ 1.8 billion
2) The Lord of the Rings : Return of the King - $ 1.1 billion
3) Pirates of the Caribbean : Dead Man's Chest - $ 1.06 billion
4) Avatar - $ 1.02 billion
5) The Dark Knight - $ 1 billion

'Avatar' released 18 days ago, and it's the most expensive movie made so far, at US $ 500 million. 'Titanic', the all-time top grosser, made $ 1.8 billion more than a decade back. After adjusting for inflation the figure would be much more than $ 2.0 at current prices. Havn't seen 'Avatar' so far but a nephew and couple of nieces have, and they liked the movie. Will probably watch it in a hall when it releases in Dehradun.

This morning's paper says 'Avatar' has overtaken Pirates of the Caribbean : Dead Man's Chest to become the third highest grosser all-time. Earnings till Tuesday : $ 1.1 billion, domestic - $ 367 million, foreign - $ 731.2 million. Today is Friday and I'm sure it has already overtaken The Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King which earned $ 1.12 billion.

Interestingly the Businnes Standard writes the movie's production cost is US $ 300 million.

Acai Palm and Acai Fruit

The Acai palm is a species of palm trees. It's botanical name is Euterpe Oleracea. It is native to Central and South America, and is grown primarily in swamps and floodplains. Acai palms are tall and slender and attain heights upto 30 meters.

It's name comes from the European adaptation of the Tupian word i wasa'i, which means - "(fruit that) cries or expels water."

Acai fruit is small, round and black-purple in colour. It is about 1 inch in diameter, the seed is large, 0.25-0.40 inches in diameter. It is similar in size and appearance to a grape, but the quantity of pulp is much less. Acai fruit grows in bunches of 500-900.

Acai fruit has traditionally been harvested as food by Amazonian people. For three Caboclo populations, it was found to make up upto 42% of their total food intake. It has been a part of many traditional Brazilian dishes. It's also consumed in Brazil as an ice-cream flavour, flavoured liqueur and juice.

In May last year, Bloomberg reported that the expanding popularity of Acai in the United States is, "depriving Brazilian jungle populations of a protein-rich nutrient they have relied on for generations."

Acai juice, pulp and extracts have attained global popularity in the last two decades due to the health benefits. The biggest market for Acai products right now is the United States hwere it is consumed in the form of juice, juice blends, powder, capsules, soda and ice-cream among other forms.

An Artificial Mind : 2018

The blue brain project led by Swiss Professor Henry Markram, is working to create the world's first artificial conscious and intelligent mind, by 2018.

The project takes apart actual brains cell by cell, analyses the billions of connections between the cells, and then plots these connections into a computer.

The scientists of the brain mind institute at Ecole Polytechnique in Lusanne are building a software which they claim will render vivisection obsolete, conquer insanity and improve human intelligence and ability to learn. They would start with copying a rat's brain and ultimately progress to a human brain.

The project will give birth to a sentinent mind that will be able to think, reason, express will, lay down memories and perhaps even experience love, anger, pain, sadness and joy, it is hoped.

Creating a complex software is understandable. What I fail to imagine is how this software will mimic human mind or brain. Interesting stuff nonetheless.

2010 Forbes India Billionaires

Was googling for predictions on the 2010 list of Forbes Billionaires and came across this article on Reuters which says Forbes announced their annual list of Billionaires in November 2009.

IIRC Forbes published a similar list in the first quarter of 2009 too. Perhaps it is a biannual list. This article on Ruters says the number of Indian Billionaires has nearly doubled, from 27 in 2008 to 52 in 2009.

Forbes gave the figure as 24 in March last year. I guess the difference is because some of these billionaires are of Indian origin but do not hold Indian citizenship. Depends which way you want to look at the glass.

Top 3 in the Forbes India Billionaires list 2010 are :

* Mukesh Ambani - Net Worth US $ 32 billion.
* Lakshmi Mittal - Net Worth US $ 30 billion.
* Anil Ambani - Net Worth US $ 17.5 billion.

The combined net worth of India's 100 wealthiest people is $ 276 billion, about 25% of the country's GDP. For China the figure stands at $ 170 billion. It seems Chinese capitalism is more socialist. China's GDP is nearly 5 times that of India.

There is an interesting article on the Forbe's website ; "Billionaire Predictions 2010". It has predictions by Norman Braman, John Catsimatidis, David Cheriton, Leon Charney, Mark Cuban, Adi Godrej, R.J. Kirk, Arnon Milchan, Peter Sondakh and Mortimer Zuckerman on Global Economy this year.

I'm sure these websites don't mean business but I couldn't understand how some of them have inserted . in the domain name. I'm no tech geek but to the best of my knowledge only alpha numeric characters are allowed in domain names.

Raturi Vansham

Thought about taking a break for a couple of weeks but lots going through my mind right now.

Raturi Vansham is an effort by Mr. Girish Sharan Raturi to bring all Raturis under one roof. Met him twice and found him to be an extremely humble individual with a very well developed vision.

Mr. Satyanand Rajbal settled in Garhwal in 980 AD and his progeny came to be known as "Raturi", coz the village he settled in was "Ratura". Ratura is located in district Rudraprayag.

Where did Satyanand Rajbal came from?
The book "Garhwal ka Itihaas" by Pandit Harikrishan Raturi says Satyanand Rajbal, the common ancestor of all Raturis came from "Gaur Desh", to teach the son of Maharaja Kanakpal, first king of the Panwar dynasty, and settled in Ratura, located near Chandpur Garhi, the then capital of Garhwal.

Have come acroos various opinions regarding the location of Gaur Desh.
My father has always told me Raturis migrated from Bengal. Saw a piece on internet, some years ago, which I cannot find now, it claimed Raturis originated from Maharashtra. On a group on Orkut, a social networking site, a member wrote Raturis originated from Kashmir. Mr. Girish Sharan Raturi's opinion is that Satyanand Rajbal was from Gujarat. Wherever he came from : his progeny are spread today, not just in India but the entire world. According to Mr. Girish Sharan Raturi there are 3000 families of Raturis today, my estimate is 5000 or more.

Finding my roots has always interested me. If you are a Raturi and would like to be a part of Raturi Vansham please attend the first meeting of 2010. Raturi Vansham's first meet of the year is held on the 2nd Sunday of January each year.

So be at the Chandrabadni Temple, Clement Town - Haridwar Bypass Road, Kargi, Dehradun on the 10th of this month at 11:00 AM.
