Water Confirmed on Moon!

India's first moon mission Chandrayaan 1 has found evidence of water on the surface of the moon.

"The moon has distinct signatures of water. The evidence of water molecules on the surface of the moon was found by the moon mineralogy mapper (M3) of the US based NASA onboard Chandrayaan 1," M3 principal investigator Carle Pieters said in a paper published in the journal Science. M3 is one of the 11 scientific instruments onboard the lunar spacecraft that was launched Oct 22, 2008 by the ISRO.

"Harvesting one ton of the top layer of the moon's surface will yield as much as 32 ounces (907 grams) of water, scientists involved in the discovery said.

The findings give rise to interesting new questions about where the water molecules come from and where they may be going.

Cambrian Hall School Dehradun

Some recent pics of Cambrian Hall School, Dehradun shot by Gaurav Ahuja. We used to be classmates at Stepping Stones and Cambrian Hall. I was surprised to learn that Mr. R C Singhal still is the principal. Maybe the Old Cambrianites Association can come up with a younger person to lead the School.

Nivedita Cottage Almora

Western Disciples of Swami Vivekananda lived in this house for a few days in 1898. Swami Vivekananda blessed Sister Nivedita (Miss Margaret Elizabeth Noble) under the "Deodar Tree". Swami Ji gave her new name Sister/Bhagini Nivedita in 1898 in this historical building.

This building was purchased by Lala Hari Shah Thulgharia, great grandfather of current owner Mr. Girish Shah Thulgharia. He purchased it in an auction in 1866 for a sum of Rs. 600 from the then DM John Baeket, who was the first Commissioner of United Province.

At that time Nivedita Cottage was known as "Anta House". Later on it became known as "Oakley House", as in 1869 famous educationist R W Emerson Oakley moved in as a tenant.

In 1898, during his third visit to Almora, Swami Vivekananda used to share breakfast and evening tea with his western disciples in this building.

Mr. Girish Shah Thulgarhia's family still owns another historical house in Almora. The house is located in Khajanchi Mohalla and Swami VIvekananda was hosted there by Mr. Girish Shah Thulgharia's grandfather Lala Badri Shah Thulgharia, during Swami Ji's first and second visits to Almora in 1890 and 1897.

Nivedita Cottage has hosted many other historical figures like Mr. Devendra Nath Thakur (1934) and Rabindranath Tagore. Mr. Girish Shah Thulgharia has a personal museum which has many items associated with Swami Vivekjananda. It is open to general public everyday between 4.30 and 7.00 PM.

Mr. Girish Shah Thulgharia has made available some rooms in the building for accomodation of devotees of Swami Ji.

I had a long conversation with Mr. Shah and he would like to preserve the building for future genrations. His means are limited and it would be great if able people interested in History and Culture come forward to help him. Phone # 9412092531 and 05962-231295. Country code +91.
