Congress UPA Set to Form the Next Indian Government

The exit polls have been proved wrong. The Congress led UPA is set to from the next government in New Delhi. Results for around 300 of the total 543 seats are out and UPA has won 141 seats so far. NDA headed by the biggest opposition party BJP is a distant second with 89 seats. Third Front has won 31 and the Fourth Front 8, while others account for 12.

272 is the magic figure to form the government. Trends are available for all of the seats and the UPA would bag around 260 seats by the time the counting ends. NDA would have 160, Third Front 66, Fourth Front 24 and others 30.

Source : Indian Elections

The Prime Minister has invited the Left parties to join the UPA in forming the next government at the centre. He has also made it clear that Rahul Gandhi will join the next cabinet as a minister. The Fourth Front, an alliance of erstwhile UPA partners in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has received a major drubbing in Bihar and the former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav has accepted the mistake and seems set to return to the Congress fold. Both BSP and SP will bag about 25 seats each. That puts and end to the Prime Ministerial aspirations of Mulayam Yadav and Mayawati.

Democracy certainly makes India better than some other nations and the Indian voter has posed confidence in the Manmohan Singh led UPA. With major economies in recession and unstable neighbours I welcome the verdict and hope the government would last it's term and take India forward.

India Next Government : UPA or NDA

Voting for the last phase of the general elections is over and in a couple of days results would be out.

Most exit polls predict that Congress (I) will emerge as the single largest party, and Congress (I) + allies, the UPA would be the largest coalition. However, BJP and allies won't be far behind and ultimately the smaller, regional players would decide who gets to rule India for the next 5 years.

The lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha, has 543 seats. UPA is projected to bag between 190-200 seats and NDA 175-190. That means bothe the larger alliances have to find around 90 MP's to form a government. Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are the key states and parleys have begun in true earnest.

Manmohan Singh is favoured by punters to be the next PM. LK Advani is a distant second.

A couple of days ago there was an interesting news story about an astrologer predicting mid-term elections in 2010 due to unusual transits of Jupiter. I don't know how to read astro charts but the close results predicted and difficulties of maintaining a coalition government make the prediction a very likely scenario.

Chingis Khan Quotes

Some Chingis Khan Quotes I really really like.

"Heaven has appointed me to rule all the nations, for hitherto there has been no order upon the steppes."

“It is not sufficient that I succeed — all others must fail.”

“I am the punishment of God...If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.”

“The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters.”

"Perhaps my children will live in stone houses and walled towns - Not I"

"With Heaven's aid I have conquered for you a huge empire. But my life was too short to achieve the conquest of the world. That task is left for you."

Installing PhpBB On GoDaddy

While the installation instructions included with most open source software are fantastic, I always seem to find something missing. Of course that missing piece is usually host specific, otherwise they would have it in their documentation. With that in mind, installing phpBB forum software on a GoDaddy hosted server is quite easy. I'll document the installation step by step.

The forum software, phpBB, which stands I assume for PHP bulletin board is a really nice piece of free open source software. It allows you to run a forum, also known as a bulletin board, on your web site assuming you have the following.

1) Your web server needs to support php (as godaddy does at least certainly on their linux offerings).
2) You need access to a MySQL database.
- actually, technically you need one of the supported databases, but since I'm writing this in the context of running it on godaddy, let's consider MySQL the de-facto standard.

Let's get down to installing phpBB on godaddy.com. The first thing you need to do is download phpBB. You can find this by doing a search on google, or by going to Open Source Depot.

Once you've downloaded phpBB to your local machine, you'll need to unzip it. After unzipping, you'll find a folder with all the phpBB files in it. In fact, with the version I downloaded it was several folders deep.

Create a folder on your server to put your phpBB install. On my server, I've decided to put phpBB in my /opensourcedepot/forums folder. the folder /opensourcedepot already existed, so I needed to create a sub folder called forums. I did this using FileZilla (the FTP client program that I like to use).

So, now I change to the forums directory and "put" all the files and folders contained in my phpBB folder to the server. It's the directory with the admin folder and all the files, basically take everything recursively down.

I'm writing this as I'm doing a the install for the forums at Open Source Depot (and taking screen snapshots along the way). Right now, my ftp client (FileZilla) is uploading the files to my server. For me, this will take a few minutes, during which time I should go over to my godaddy server and set up a MySQL database.

I don't have room here to discuss every nuance of how to set up a MySQL database on godaddy, but there are other sources of information to help you with that, including those found at Open Source Depot. That article outlines the one really important thing about installing these pieces of software on GoDaddy, the database IP address.

Most of these installs assume that "localhost" will work (as it does on say hostgator), but on GoDaddy, you're database is not necessarily on the same machine as your web server, so you need to specify an address like myname.myserver.net in order to find that address you need to open your database from the hosting manager and the address will appear in your title bar. Either that, or go to the MySQL databases section and click on the pencil. The url for your database should appear somewhere on the screen.

I've set up my database on GoDaddy and I know my IP address for it (I'm not going to give you the real address, or logon id, or passwords here, so don't even bother looking :-)

Your phpBB files are in your forums directory on the server and you know your godaddy database IP (also username, dbname and password). Now you're ready to start the install. To do this, just go to the URL you installed the files to. Now all we need to do is follow the instructions.

I will only mention the items that I am changing in the install. Everything else is left as default.

1) Database Server HostName/DSN in this box I will put in my db IP address foo.myserver.net (of course mine is different...but I'm not telling what it was, for security reasons).
2) Your Database Name (the name you specified when creating your database.
3) Your Database User Name (with godaddy, the same as your database name).
4) Database password. The password you specified when creating the db.
5) prefix for tables in database. This is defaulted to phpbb_ I changed it to phpbb_osd_ just in case I want to install more than one forum on this db.
6) Admin Email Address - that's kind of obvious, type in the e-mail address.
7) Administrator Username (choose one).
8) Administrator password (again, choose a password).

That's it, time to start the install, click the start install button.

Now, it will prompt you that the admin id has been created and ask you to click to proceed.

Ok now phpBB's install module comes up with a message saying to make sure to delete the install and contrib directories. Do it now, before you forget.

Ok It's installed. Log in as admin and start configuring your phpBB Forums...have fun!

What Is PHPBB All About Then?

The abbreviation phpBB stands for PHP Bulletin Board, i.e., a bulletin board scripted in the PHP programming language. A bulletin board, also referred to as message board, discussion board, web forum, Internet forum or discussion forum, is a platform on the WorldWideWeb that facilitates (i) creation of a virtual community of like-minded people and (ii) interaction among them.

The very popular phpBB is a high-powered, fully scalable, highly customizable and free open-source (i.e., no fees, no subscriptions, no restriction on modifications) Internet forum software package that can support a variety of database management systems such as MYSQL, Microsoft SQL, PostgreSQL and Microsoft Access (via ODBC). With its user-friendly interface, straightforward administration panel and helpful FAQs, phpBB is the ideal free community builder for all kinds of websites.

The key features of the phpBB Internet forum system are:

Search Amazon.com for phpbb books

Simple installation
Multiple-language interface
Support for a host of database servers
High security, with powerful and extensive authorization system and strong encryption for password safety
Unlimited forums that can be organized into unlimited categories
Unlimited forum members
Private or public forums
Powerful search facility
Private messaging facility
Template customization
Messages formatting in various font styles and sizes, also allowing image posting, code display, automatic URL linking
Easy-to-use admin panel
A large community of phpBB users providing free support

phpBB Forum Hosting

A multitude of phpBB forum hosting service providers exist in the web services market, offering right from 100% free or inexpensive forum hosting packages to premium paid forum hosting packages, depending upon the quality of the server, the features included in the package and the quality of the customer service and support provided by the forum hosting company. The 100% free type of phpBB massage boards generally come with limited disk space and limited bandwidth per month and are usually accompanied by banner ads, whereas the premium paid forum hosting packages are ad-free packages with larger disk space and maybe unlimited bandwidth per month.

As mentioned earlier, an Internet forum is a platform for people having common interests where they can meet virtually and exchange ideas on any topic of interest, be it technology, politics, health, gaming, or whatever. By doing so they can find solutions to their problems or can help others solve their problems by giving them advice. If used intelligently and diligently, in addition to the socializing activity a forum can also be exploited to drive traffic to your website. So, go ahead and join a relevant forum or host your own phpBB forum on your website.

Websites from Uttarakhand

Noticed a few more websites from Uttarakhand in the past week or so. I have been using the internet for a decade and been searching for info on my state since the beginning. One major difference I see is that earlier webmasters tried to create websites covering all of Uttarakhand while newer one's are niche sites. This is certainly a good sign. It would be great if we can create a webring to join all these sites. More on it later.

Badri Kedar dot Com
This website provides info on major temples in Uttarakhand. It also has links to major tourist attractions of Uttarakhand and websites on Uttarakhand. The best thing I like about the site is that it has incorporated a blog. Static websites are so web 1.0 and one needs to keep updating content inorder to promote a concept/website. Great job by Mr. Kamleshwar Bhatt. Ofocurse there is scope for improvement and I'll contact Mr. Bhatt with thoughts on how the website can be improved.

Naukuchiatal Lake Village dot Com
This website focusses on a particular village, Naukuchia Tal. One of the crazy ideas I have is to create a website for each village in Uttarakhand and join them. I think it would be a great tool for communication and exchange of ideas. The website is focussed on tourists. Great pictures. Was in Nainital a few days ago. Great weather.

Nanak Matta Sahib dot Com
Nanak Matta is a Gurdwara associated with the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev. It is located between Sitarganj and Khatima in Uddham Singh Nagar district.

Sitar Ganj dot Com
Sitar Ganj is a town located in District Uddham Singh Nagar. Nice to see it being on the net. The website provides info on shops and professionals in Sitarganj. Nice initiative by Mr. Alok Mishra of Delight Softwares.

Raturi Hospital
The website is under construction, however the Hospital has started functioning. It is headed by Dr. Anand Mohan Raturi and is located in Nanakmatta. More details on Raturi Hosital soon.

Also check out the DMOZ Directory.
