Democracy & Dough

"For Forms of Government let fools contest; whatever is best administered is best."
~ Alexander Pope

While I agree with Mr.Pope, democracy does seem to be the better option amongst different ways of governing a nation/society.

The election of Mr.Obama as the President of the United States has resulted in a lot of positivity worldwide. He is young & the first person of colour to lead the U.S.People expect a lot from him & he has to clean up the mess left behind by the Bush administration.

Time will tell whether he lives up to the expectations. However he did outperform Mr.McCain by a big margin as far as the race for generating funds for the Presidential elections is concerned.According to this report Mr.Obama smashed all previous records of political fundraising & spending in the U.S. & thereby world.

While I favoured Obama over McCain during the race, these figures do make one wonder about the significance of campaign funds in deciding the result of a democratic election.Another thing to note is that unlike other U.S. Presidential candidates in the recent past Obama raised most of the money from small online donations.Maybe it was a case of him being smarter & more in touch with the young generation.
