Congress UPA Set to Form the Next Indian Government

TwitThis

Saturday, May 16, 2009

The exit polls have been proved wrong. The Congress led UPA is set to from the next government in New Delhi. Results for around 300 of the total 543 seats are out and UPA has won 141 seats so far. NDA headed by the biggest opposition party BJP is a distant second with 89 seats. Third Front has won 31 and the Fourth Front 8, while others account for 12.

272 is the magic figure to form the government. Trends are available for all of the seats and the UPA would bag around 260 seats by the time the counting ends. NDA would have 160, Third Front 66, Fourth Front 24 and others 30.

The Prime Minister has invited the Left parties to join the UPA in forming the next government at the centre. He has also made it clear that Rahul Gandhi will join the next cabinet as a minister. The Fourth Front, an alliance of erstwhile UPA partners in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has received a major drubbing in Bihar and the former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav has accepted the mistake and seems set to return to the Congress fold. Both BSP and SP will bag about 25 seats each. That puts and end to the Prime Ministerial aspirations of Mulayam Yadav and Mayawati.

Democracy certainly makes India better than some other nations and the Indian voter has posed confidence in the Manmohan Singh led UPA. With major economies in recession and unstable neighbours I welcome the verdict and hope the government would last it's term and take India forward.

India Next Government : UPA or NDA

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Voting for the last phase of the general elections is over and in a couple of days results would be out.

Most exit polls predict that Congress (I) will emerge as the single largest party, and Congress (I) + allies, the UPA would be the largest coalition. However, BJP and allies won't be far behind and ultimately the smaller, regional players would decide who gets to rule India for the next 5 years.

The lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha, has 543 seats. UPA is projected to bag between 190-200 seats and NDA 175-190. That means bothe the larger alliances have to find around 90 MP's to form a government. Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are the key states and parleys have begun in true earnest.

Manmohan Singh is favoured by punters to be the next PM. LK Advani is a distant second.

A couple of days ago there was an interesting news story about an astrologer predicting mid-term elections in 2010 due to unusual transits of Jupiter. I don't know how to read astro charts but the close results predicted and difficulties of maintaining a coalition government make the prediction a very likely scenario.

Some Chingis Khan Quotes I really really like.

"Heaven has appointed me to rule all the nations, for hitherto there has been no order upon the steppes."

“It is not sufficient that I succeed — all others must fail.”

“I am the punishment of God...If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.”

“The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters.”

"Perhaps my children will live in stone houses and walled towns - Not I"

"With Heaven's aid I have conquered for you a huge empire. But my life was too short to achieve the conquest of the world. That task is left for you."
